01 Aug WHY IS INCLUSION IMPORTANT IN MOBILE?
“Diversity is being invited to a party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.”
I recently heard this quote at a conference. Out of the numerous quotes I heard throughout the day, this one resonated with me. Mobile is such a complex city. It has historic roots from the Spanish and the French. Profound cultural significance and flavor is evident through the downtown area. It also has roots grown from the Civil Rights Era, and even Slavery-era America. Diversity and inclusivity isn’t synonymous. Inclusivity is important in Mobile simply because we progress as a people when we work together. Innovation and understanding are products of an inclusive atmosphere.
Individuals can see outside of their perspective when another perspective is put into view. It is in that moment when we allow ourselves to escape groupthink and our personal biases that we can invite others to be a part of the conversation. Nothing successful in this world is done alone. Fear, anger, sadness and joy. Every human has the right to not only experience these emotions, but convey them to others. That is how change comes about. It’s easy to invite someone to a party. A simple letter, email, or text message can serve as an invitation. However, it’s up to us to walk up to that person we haven’t met a day in our lives, and ask them to dance.
